Before the joyous celebrations of the 5th of May, there is a solemn moment of remembrance on the 4th of May. On this day, the Dutch commemorate those who laid down their lives for our freedom. At 8 pm, the entire country observes a two-minute silence. The largest ceremony is held at Dam Square in Amsterdam, where members of the royal family, relatives of the deceased, and government officials lay flowers at the monument.
